This ParkTool School Novice coarse is ideal for those looking to gain some mechanical experience and a desire to expand their knowledge and skill set. This course will give the novice or home mechanic a greater understanding of mechanical systems through hands-on instruction and engaging conversations. The course will be taught by Sweet Pete's pro's, senior production mechanics with years of bicycle service experience. They'll walk you through the ins and outs of diagnostics, repairs, and installations for all manner of bikes. Students will receive a Park Tool School Certificate of Completion upon finishing the course.
The cost per session (4 classes per session) is $250 + tax and each class is 2 hours in duration with a 30min question/free time at the end. The $250 fee will include the soon to be released 4th-edition of Park Tool's Big Blue Book*. Participants will also receive a 10% discount on any parts and tool purchases while enrolled. Also included is free storage for your bicycle if you'd prefer to keep it at the class room. All classes are taught at our Sweet Pete's Annex location.
* The 4th edition of Big Blue Book will not be available until Spring 2019 and the 3rd edition is completely sold out!
Course Dates: Sunday mornings starting Feb/17 and including Feb/24, Mar/03 and Mar/10.
Course Times: Classes run from 9:30am to 11:30am
Class 1 Foundations of Bike Terminology, Basic Diagnostics and Safety Checks - Identifying what parts of the bike does what, shop equipment overview and safety checking.
Class 2 Tires, Tubes and Brakes - Get to know the ins of inner tubes, the outs of your tire questions and stop guessing about brakes. Get to know the many types of brake, their history and future, and learn how to properly adjust the brakes on your own bike.
Class 3 Drivetrain - Now that it stops, make it go! Learn about all the components of the drivetrain including chains, cassettes, cranksets and bottom brackets. Learn how to care for your drivetrain in all seasons, and how to install and remove all of the drivetrain components.
Class 4 Shifting Gears - Get to know the fundamentals of gear adjustment. From knowing and identifying shifters to replacing cables and housing like an expert, from adjusting derailleurs properly once they're installed to matching everything together, get the low down on how your gears come together.
Must be 16 or older to participate.
