What we look for in a commuter bike
When we recommend commuter bikes to our customers and friends, we usually look for curtain features. Here are some of those things you can start thinking about.
- Comfortable geometry/upright position: Look for an upright frame geometry, as it offers a more relaxed riding position, which reduces strain on the back and neck. This design is ideal for shorter, urban commutes, helping riders stay alert and easily navigate traffic.
- Wider, versatile tires: Commuters aren't road bikes. Slightly wider tires, at least 35mm wide, provide a smooth ride over urban obstacles like potholes and curbs. They offer extra grip on wet surfaces, making for a safer, more stable commute.
- Fender and rack mounts: Fenders keep water and dirt off your clothes, a must for wet or muddy conditions. Racks allow for carrying bags, groceries, or even a laptop safely, which can eliminate the need for a backpack.
- Durable frame: A commuter bike should have a durable frame, typically steel or aluminum, as they withstand daily wear and are more resistant to dents when you inevitably knock it over in your garage.
- Disc brakes: We like disc brakes for all season stopping power. Discs get a lot less gunk built up on them than rims brakes, and that makes for a safer, not to mention quieter ride.
- Pedal assist motor (for longer commutes): If you leave quite a ways from where you work or need to ride to, having an ebike might be the daily difference between choosing to drive and choosing to pedal in the fresh air.
